It is always an interesting thing when you are asked to dissect something that you do every day without thought. Our discussion in class on Tuesday has left me thinking about walking and how it has affected my life. Today, I thought about how I would love love love to walk. But every time I try lately, seems like I end up on my behind (stupid ice). So it’s been the bare minimum in outdoor walking activity lately. This past summer I walked and biked a great deal. It’s just more fun than sitting on the bus in my opinion and I didn’t have a car to take places. Relying on yourself and your two legs to get to places is a great thing, though only if time permits.
I wish I had something more insightful to add but...I don’t.

I think you hit something interesting there when you said "relying on yourself and your two legs to get places". In our world we're so reliant on cars to get places, that sometimes we forget that if we need to go somewhere, we can just walk. I found it liberating to make the choice to walk to the LRT station instead of driving. Driving seems so cumbersome now that I've been walking everywhere I can. I know this isn't a fully formed thought, but it's something maybe to keep thinking about.
ReplyDeleteI really liked how in your post you described how largely we are influenced by outside circumstance in regards to walking. The most limiting factor is of course time and who in our hectic world has time to just walk? Unless he utterly depends on it and than he MAKES time. Also, walking in winter is quite a different experince as you said, though I prefer it over the summer. I may slip and fall (which is funny more than anything), but I like walking in the snow and detest walking in the hot sun. But then everybody is different.
ReplyDeletei do really enjoy walking but it seems there is always somewhere to go and no time to enjoy the actual walk. as for ice, it seems that is inevitable these days, but during the summer there are plenty of trails through the river valley that make for really good walking
ReplyDeleteWalking or biking is a lot more fun than taking a bus or a car. I find it interesting that this discussion on walking lead a few of us in the class to ponder our "walking lives". It's always awesome to know that there are many people out there that walk instead of drive, but you're right... I mostly wish that time would permit for me to walk everywhere without taking forever!
ReplyDeleteI agree with the comment about relying on your own two things. You have to be alot more resourceful when there aren't wheels involved!
ReplyDeleteI would also like to share a story about walking. I was hurrying into the Rutherford library last Monday because the bus was 10 minutes late and I hate walking into class late. Anyways I wasn't paying enough attention and I slipped on the ice and fell. And this was the not the kind of fall you can come out of gracefully. We're talking iPod flying across the road, sprawled out, snow and mud covered fall. I was so embarassed I almost got back onto the bus to go home! But I did end up making it to class. Anyways, my point is that the reason I fell could be chalked up to the fact the bus was late. So sometimes relying on a car or bus isn't the best way to do things either!
